The job TextLimit solves

TextLimit is a focused browser utility for measuring a draft against the limits that show up in forms, posts, page titles, descriptions, APIs, databases, SMS messages, scripts, and content fields. It keeps related counts together so a visible character limit is not confused with bytes, graphemes, words, or SMS encoding.

How it is maintained

TextLimit is maintained alongside ImageUnder and PDF Limit as an independent, single-purpose utility. New presets are added only when they require a distinct measurement or workflow, not simply a new keyword label for the same counter.

Private counting by default

Draft text is counted in the browser tab. Character, word, byte, SMS, paragraph, line, sentence, reading-time, speaking-time, and pixel estimates do not need a server upload. The optional Smart shorten action is different and is explained before use and on the privacy page.

Transparent counting rules

The methodology page documents the browser APIs, fallback behavior, SMS tables, time assumptions, and pixel-width heuristic used by the current build. This matters because two counters can disagree without either one being broken when their definitions differ.

What TextLimit cannot decide

A count does not judge clarity, truth, accessibility, legal compliance, or whether a platform will rewrite a title, shorten a link, normalize Unicode, or append hidden text. TextLimit gives a reproducible drafting check; the destination field remains the final authority.

How to verify a strict submission

Paste the complete final draft, include whitespace, links, mentions, and punctuation, choose the matching unit, and copy only after the selected limit passes. For business-critical fields, recount the submitted value in the destination system or its documented API.
