Why this page exists
Character rules can change across systems.
Whitespace, Unicode composition, and appended text are common reasons two counters disagree.
Exact input
Spaces, punctuation, and line breaks belong in the draft you count.
Graphemes
A visible symbol can contain more than one Unicode code point.
Final check
The destination field remains the authority for its own limit.
Practical guide
Count the characters a strict field can reject.
Character limits appear simple until whitespace, emoji, accented text, and pasted formatting are involved. This page keeps the hard count beside the related measurements that explain unexpected results.
What the main count includes
The primary character count includes letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces, and line breaks. Paste the exact text you plan to submit because trimming or retyping it elsewhere can change the result.
Visible symbols can differ
TextLimit also reports graphemes. Some emoji and accented symbols are assembled from multiple Unicode code points, so one visible symbol can produce a different character total in systems that use another counting rule.
Hard and soft limits
A hard limit blocks text above a fixed number. A soft editorial target only signals that a draft may be too long. Set the target to the actual field requirement and treat the status as a measurement, not a writing-quality score.
Shortening without breaking meaning
Remove repetition and filler before deleting necessary names, dates, numbers, or calls to action. Smart shorten is optional and sends the draft to the site's AI service only after you choose to use it.
Before submitting to a character-limited field
- Include prefixes, labels, hashtags, and links that will be submitted with the text.
- Check whether the destination counts spaces, line breaks, and composed emoji differently.
- Leave a small buffer when another system may append tracking text or formatting.
- Paste the finished result into the destination and confirm its own counter agrees.
